Perfume Review: Amouage Lyric Man, Amouage

Amouage Lyric Man ,

(English version)

One of the major advantages in the perfumery art is the possibility of changing the mindset of perfume making for men and women or, at least, create perfumes which don't have to follow some status quo, feeding certain stereotypes between sexies. An example is related to perfumes which feature roses. An ingredient which hardly is worn by West men and, in certain way, there is a traditional prejudice that perfumes inspired in roses are typically for ladies, what it means a pure mistake and olfactory limitation.

Amouage Lyric Man ,
inspired in roses, breaks paradigms one more time and brings to the market an interesting and beautiful blending in which there is the floral delicateness what implies reinforcing a mindset that male fragrances do not need to have a strong men's scent, "very macho". In certain way, Amouage, starts from the East culture, that respects and uses many roses in male fragrances, confirming that floral raw materials in men's perfumes can produce mixes which do not lower the worth of the masculinity , on the contrary, they value it.

Amouage has reinforced in its perfumery an olfactory modernity having creative and refined noses such as Bertrand Duchaufour (who composed the magnificent Jubilation Men), balancing in their mixes the aromatic legacy of East notes as spicies and exotic woodies with the versatility of light and fresh fragrances, so common in the West. Amouage Lyric Man , released in 2008 and created by Daniel Visentin, carries in its notes breakdown, fragrant materials which blend the freshness of bergamot and lime with the flowers romantism, a garden of roses, angelicas and orange blossoms and, at the final development, to honour the magie of spicies, incenses and East woodies, the fragrance harmonizes itself as the notes of a symphony, featuring notes of galbanum, ginger, saffron and nutmeg, pine tree, sandalwood, musk, vanilla and incense.

Lyric Man is very well aligned to the olfactive enchantement which has been brought to the brand by the Amouage creative director Christopher Chong . Much more than only enchanting consumers and guide them to know better the brand, the creative direction has been very strategical. The last releases such as Lyric Man and Woman and Jubilation Men and Woman are better captivating perfumes when compared to Amouage older fragrances as Gold and Ciel. They let their scents linger in noses that, previously, have never heard from Amouage and/or have never given the deserving attention, then, under my point of view, Amouage has been innovative and opened space to compete more globally and, mainly, among its west competitors.

Lyric Man is a light, well-done and accessible ,under the technical point of view. Firstly, there is no exaggerated pungency of oriental raw materials as those mixes "Middle Eastern style", then its approval by the audience is more democratic and wearable by men and women. Its accessible way is that, when someone inhales the aroma, Lyric Man
enters in the consumer mind as fast as the sound of a lyric and, good music pleases ears as well as a good perfume pleases noses. The fragrance start is sustained by an aroma more focused in the love triangle among the bergamot, roses and galbanum joining the three tips : freshness, delicateness and exotic orientality. There is a mystery in the first sniff as if the first sounds of a lyric would indicate that it will be a sonorous clímax ahead, in this fact, Lyric Man has resonant chords, lyric by lyric, in its olfactory notes. The rose and the bergamot are very well marked on the blending with some lightness and there is a certain powdery effect at the beginning of the fragrance, however there is also the sinuous effect of spicies notes such nutmeg and saffron, both sometimes are closer, sometimes are distant, collaborating to its nuances richness . As notes of a olfactory pleasure, it is possible to feel the surreal sound of nutmeg in a rosy base ,muskier than incense-like.

In an oniric manner in this olfactive experience, the name
Lyric, lyrics and music, creates the sensitive and male picture of East musicians, derbake players, poets and messengers of the sound; sound which is captured by our ears has the same emotion of aromas which are captured by our noses. The slight scent of roses becomes evident that a man, romantic and touchy, with noble feelings has an artist soul. He is a gentleman in his own nature. He is a musician who carries the sensibility so common in female spirits and he is out of stereotypes of masculinity that affirm he cannot feel deep emotions, he cannot surrender himself and express the theme-song of sultry oriental gardens , where his heart also blooms.

Lyric touches his skin, he touches the musical instrument and his soul perfume is exhaled as a majestic, elegant and unforgettable " true lyric". Musical notes and olfactive ones are blended and complete themselves and the divine arts of music and perfumery together make flourish a brilliant and unique flower, a
rose-carnation in the gardens of Amouage.
