Perfume Review: Elegance Men, Lacoste

(English Version)

Elegance is the new men fragrance of Lacoste , the famous brand of crocodile created by the Frenchman René Lacoste in the decade of 30. According to the records only in 1968, Lacoste started its fragrances range with an agreement signed with Jean Patou for Lacoste Eau de Toilette. The brand became known in fashion concept and also in history and tradition through the clothing for the sports universe related to Tennis, specifically in T-Shirts manufacturing which are produced also for golfing and sailing sports.

Elegance was created in 2007 in order to bring a new concept for Lacoste fragrances, more sophisticated and social without losing the track of freshness and casual approach that are so closer to the Lacoste fashion. The fragrance is a oriental fougère with top fresh notes of mint and juniper, followed by a sweet heart warmed up by fruit and spicy notes of rasperry, nutmeg, black pepper and cardamon and a woody and cream base done by chocolate, sandalwood, cedarwood, amber and musk.

The fragrance has a fresh opening influenced by the mint and the sweetness that, at first, second and so sniff is not based by a strong presence of red fruits, in this case the rasperry; however the frutal is there as something more generic. As soon as the fragrance develops more to its heart notes, it is clear to notice the presence of nutmeg and black pepper attached to the frutal smell, both become the perfume captivating and seductive. In that moment, it is possible to suppose that there is also clove in Elegance because the blending re-visites some spicy accords of clove, cinnamon, cardamon, nutmeg, coriander and black pepper so common in some hints of spices in male fragrances. This frutal spicy mix let the fragrance very feminine if it is taken into consideration that Elegance is a male fragrance, but also the traces of the fragrance heart plus its woody base involved by a light sweetness spiceness and muskier make references to others fragrances that follow the same logic of Boss Soul of Hugo Boss. In Elegance the chocolate is not expressive for a fragrance base. The chocolate loses itself in the mix, in the warmth of the amber and is not so peculiar in Elegance sillage as we are able to see in fragrances as
Very Irresistible of Givenchy and A*men of Thierry Mugler.

Elegance is not a bad perfume, it is nice, however Lacoste should be more aggressive on the briefing target, creating a perfume that has more virility and refinement and then meeting better the purposes that moved them to this innovation. The fragrance also loses its aroma during the olfactive development because its longlasting power is under the expected average, so it is possible to realize that there are some "gaps" of intensity and duration of the notes on the skin. Moreover, Elegance has the delicateness of feminine skins, totally wearable by women.

On the other hand, Lacoste was able to achieve a good target of "evolution" in its perfumery because, in a general manner, its fragrances are very fresh and light as the brand concept. Elegance is a warm fragrance, a comfort scent, more casual and can be wearable during the business day, for office occasions or for a social event. For those men that enjoy Boss Soul, they may have Elegance as one more perfume among the fragrances options, however it will be essential to spray Elegance more times during the day or, if they prefer, they will be able to choose the Hugo Boss fragrance that has a better longlasting power.

Even if the perfume had not been the "Elegance" that I expected for, at least, my expectation was to see an advertisement that would overcome the concept of good taste and refinement, after all the fragrance calls "Elegance". There is no doubts, that my big disappointment was to see that the ad is worst than the fragrance. Watching a man who moves a woman in circles many times made me think that it was a real sacrifice for her to follow him in this dance. A dance that did not bring ellaborated steps or a visual and contemplative poetry that would make me say: "Hmmm, what elegant!". Well, maybe the elegance is in the man's behaviour when gently he decided to invite a stewardess to a dance in a unexpected way. Finally and, any way, please men wear Elegance but do not whirl with a woman like the couple in the ad. She may swoon on the ground and not on your arms.

Perfume Review: Jacomo for her, Jacomo Paris

Venus wit the mirror, Titian, Renaissance epoch

Jacomo for her é um chypre único, extremamente elegante, clássico e atemporal.

Venus at the mirror, Peter Paul Rubens, Barroque epoch

(English version)

Jacomo for her is the chypre amber fragrance specially released by Jacomo Paris and developed by the Givaudan nez Marie-Aude Couture-Bluches in homage for the high jewerly and the feminine seduction. The perfume features notes which, if divided in a female body, contemplate a first look at this woman face with the citrus and green floral softness with heady notes of bergamot, green of hyacinth and lily of the valley; a bust which values the beauty of fragrant woman's breasts with floral notes of rose, heliotrope and hawthorn, involved by seductive ylang ylang and, exalting the body and soul of the woman sweetly enigmatic with notes of cedarwood, amber, sandalwood and tonka bean.

Even though the perfumes of Jacomo Paris are not so discussed in perfume foruns, what is very regretful considering that there is quality in this brand and a good relation between cost x benefis, the perfume house has tradition since the 70 years when the entrepreneurial business men James Kaplan and Gérard Courtin decided to join to create a leather store in the hot avenues of New York. Since that moment, the French man Mr. Courtin made the decision to dedicate to his passion for the perfumery, releasing the first male fragrance Eau Cendrée and, in following year, the female fragrance Chicane.

Jacomo for her is a recent creation, done in 2005 and is part of the revolution in the perfumery of Jacomo Paris, based on the modernity and seduction to the brand without avoiding the classics weight of its perfumes. Happily, Jacomo could achieve this target and created a very feminine fragrance which can be compared, in terms of excellent alignment between proposal and execution to others classical chypre fragrances as Mitsouko (Guerlain), Femme (Rochas), Ysatis(Givenchy), Eau du Soir(Sisley), Bandit (Robert Piguet), Cuir de Russie(Chanel). Of course, the chypres perfumes may vary their olfactory focuses, that are among the chypres mentioned above there are chypre florals, more green and floral or more animalic, however here the idea is to value Jacomo for her as a modern chypre which does not forget its origins and/or olfactive references.

Jacomo for her is an unique chypre, extremely refined, classic and timeless. Released to praise two jewerly: the material jewel, synonym of elegance and eternal accessory of the woman beauty and the corporeal jewel, synonym of the own woman, the human jewel of spectacular magnetism and eternal being woman, feminine human being, a body which sparkles always peculiar in each century, in each epoch. An exact opening of floral notes that floats brilliantly with the lightness of the bergamot and the force of the roses, accelerating the heart beats of the Jacomo Woman as well as the heart that beats stronger when a woman looks constantly the splendour of a beautiful jewerly or when she gets a jewel as a gift given by her love. A fenomenal sensation of being special among all the women, a luminous scent that lingers to not be forgotten, a transitory smell in that moment but also timeless , the scent of a woman that astonishes someone in the most sutile attitudes, the look, the reflection with adornments as perfume and precious jewels, the image on the mirror that is eternal as the Venus with the mirror (1555) of the Renaissance artist Titian or the Venus at the mirror(1615), both adorned with bracelet, earrings, rings as a veneration to the love, the beauty and Art.

A sinuous hint of ylang ylang is captivating and warms up the flowers which are involved in a classical and stronger base of amber and sandalwood, capturating men's glances, showing that under an elegant dress there is the pleasure of the most discrete woman. The discretion which is taken away from her in the naked moments when the soul is striped with the body of and then there is the final seduction action that kills and rebirths the most amorous man. Beautifully, the base of the fragrance is a chypre one with a well-balanced sweetness when compared to Narciso for her EDP, one of the best modern chypres in the market. In For her, the amber is more overwhelming, luminous and exxagerating, in Jacomo for her, the amber is well-balanced with the sandalwood note as both were, man and woman, one eye on other eye, one body on other body, making noteworthy that the Jacomo Woman was chosen by her man to be his unique woman, now and ever, Jacomo and her.

Perfume Review: Chocolovers, Aquolina

(English version)

Ending the trilogy Aquolina ((Pink Sugar, Chocolovers e Blue Sugar),I present you my new addiction, Chocolovers, the second release of this brand after the big popular success of Pink Sugar. Chocolovers is a Chocolate inspired fragrance, the sweet syrup that was lacking to cover your skin with one of the most gourmands fragrant materials that exists. The perfume features notes of bergamot, orange, lemmon, lily of valley, coriander, hazelnut, vanilla, malt and musk.

Chocolovers should name "Chococakelovers", a name that is not so much attractive, however the fragrance smells chocolate cake, soft , very fluffly that was baking in the oven some minutes ago. It is interesting to notice that the initial top notes of Chocolovers is exactly as visualize the cake's surface, still not covered by a chocolate syrup but baked, almost ready to be eaten. The feeling is the expectation of opening the mouth and bite it. The lips urge for a hunger, open slowly and the mouth starts to salivate with this sweet chocolate smell involved by provokating hazelnuts accords. The sensation is as imagine the cake preparation, having nutty chocolate tablets dissolved in the receipt. The desire is to touch the skin as touch the cake texture, eat it very slowly letting some brans spread on the floor as a chocolate glutton child does.

After five to ten minutes, the chocolate smell is invaded by a delicious mixture of orange and some others discrete citrus notes. It is like as an orange chocolate tablet that is dissolved on the tongue. The trio of citrus notes bergamot, orange and lemmon are not hard-citrusy as some summer fragrances are, but the citrus reminds me of those candies of chocolate with oranges. The aroma penetrates through my nostriles and my will is to eat my own skin like a canibalism act of a choco addict mad.

In my opinion, this is one of the best moments of Chocolovers because this orange note makes the fragrance a different one, providing to Chocolovers a distinctive interpretation in comparison to fragrances that are 100% chocolate plus vanilla. The aroma reminds me of those fine chocolate of the Swiss brand Lindt Lindor. Putting one of them in the mouth and it completely dissolves there, warming the body temperature but, on the same time, providing a flavour softness which relaxes the gastronomic moment. They reminds me of those sweet moments when I got my Lindt packages which are given by my brother that lived in Switzerland and brought them to me as a gift. I ate them, alone as a selfish chocolate woman, all them were mine and then, there was no guilty (LOL).

After the action of the adorable orange,it comes a great moment, the best for the chocolate note in Chocolovers: Chocolate and vanilla, this last note with a reminiscence similar to Tonka Bean, reinforcing the vanillic effect of the fragrance. In this moment, more than the excellent long-lasting power, other favorable point of Chocolovers is to keep the vanilla seduction that seems the vanilla of Pink Sugar and Blue Sugar. In this case, I think that this aroma is the "Aquolinade" that exists in all the fragrances of Aquolina (and that I told you in the Blue Sugar Review). You are able to smell it and say : "This is an Aquolina perfume". It is a caramelized vanilla, burnt on the base, however it is not an offensive caramel. When evaluating this characteristic, I appreciate the fact of Aquolina could isolate this smell of vanilla and use it in all its fragrances keeping them different through others notes. In certain way they were creative and do not put in risk their own range of fragrances.

In comparison to Pink Sugar, Chocolovers is more intimist and adult because the chocolate, as main note makes the desire of devouring ourselves stronger, intense like a mature certainess; then this desire follows the same intensity of attacking a full box of chocolate and devour it all. Only the chocolate box and you. Chocolovers and you. Chocolate and your skin with no space for anybody. On the other hand, Pink Sugar has something more exhibitionistic. Although Pink Sugar is innocent, the delicious vanilla has to call for public attention, has to be admired as a flirtatious girl.

Because of a certain addiction for chocolate, Chocolovers tends to be a perfume
that disagreeably sweet and exhausting if
someone wears it all the time, so the reaction will be the opposite of expecting for those who are crazy for chocolate. In termos of sensorial effects what may happen is a type of "sense frustration", I mean, if you cannot eat Chocolovers, unless you wanna die happily sweet and poisoned, unusually the olfaction will become frustrated and the desire will be driven to other sense to a replacement of sensation, in this case the taste , which will be divinely awaken for the love of chocolate.

Do not let your olfaction become frustrated, be gluttonous with your senses: Smell, feel, eat chocolate. Be in love and happy with Chocolovers.

Imagem da Semana/ Image of the week: a Photo gift, a Guerlain Shalimar, uma foto-presente, um Shalimar de Guerlain

Shalimar, Guerlain . Photo by Dâmaris Silva

For those who have followed each of my fragrant blog lines up, know that always that I am inspired for pictures, I am able to see more words in an image than words in my own words, because of that always you will see fragrant photos here and anything more.

I open this week with a gift that I got from a special friend. Her name is Dâmaris Silva, a brazilian fragrance lover and also a great photographer. Dâmaris made me a great surprise and gave me as gift some fabulous pictures that, very soon, will be part of some fragrances reviews. With pleasure, I have to post them because the beauty in the photograph is an art that few people can really do and Dâmaris is one of these people. She has an artistic eye and a simplicity in her heart that capture the true essence of the image. We are also fragrant friends, so perfumes and photograph will be a must. Moreover, although her career is not related to the photograph, she has talent and sensibility to capture the moment, the singular beauty that is able to go deep in all the others senses.

The image of the week is the image of a Guerlain perfume, the Shalimar. I reviewed this perfume when the blog had its star-up, but any way this image is all. It requires a distinct flashback, now coming in a stunning vision. A crystalline image as the water that covers the bodies of the Taj Mahal love, inspiration for this fragrance and blue as the delicate sheets that involve the fragrant nights of Shalimar, in the love bed, with the deep Guerlinade scent and the eternal Guerlain passion.

Dâmaris, Thank you!

Perfume & Poetry : Não vá, seu perfume ainda paira no ar/ Don't leave me, your perfume still lingers

as notas do meu coração
o mundo dá muitas voltas
Não mais sentirá
eu, a paixão.

Entrevista com Serge Lutens/ Conversations: Serge Lutens

*Serge Lutens interview: French/Portuguese and English versions

French Version interview

Feminite du Bois by Shiseido and Serge Lutens.

Serge Lutens' latest, Serge Noir.

An artistic colour palette enhances one's individual beauty and allows for unique makeup expressions."

Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon

Feminite du Bois by Shiseido and Serge Lutens.

Serge Lutens: Eu nunca penso no público: eu sou o público! Afinal, a aberração é a única coisa que me faz sentir bem.

Serge Lutens' latest, Serge Noir.

Serge Lutens: O luxo mata tudo: o projeto, o coração e a pulsão.

Se for arte, melhor ainda!

No entanto mantenho a cabeça erguida: a criação é obsessiva.

Senão ela me mataria!

Faço questão do verbo "peaufiner" porque ele contém a palavra pele ("peau") e a palavra fim (“fin").

Ele diz: “Makeup is one of the best ways to reveal a person's essence. An artistic color palette enhances one's individual beauty and allows for unique makeup expressions' (Shu Uemura)".

Serge Lutens: Não possuo sinônimos e sim pulsões que me guiam e com as quais me identifico.

Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon

Cris: Monsieur Lutens.

English Version interview

Monsieur Lutens, firstly I would like to thank you and Les Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido team for this special interview with the poet of the perfumes. Personally, I am a loyal admirer of your work and this is a unique moment, wonderfully unforgettable in my path as a perfume lover. I’m thankful for your creations that oriented me to develop an artistic eye on perfumery, a better olfactory conscience and the search for a fragrance which joins art, good-taste and exclusivity and, above all, be aligned to my self. In the name of Brazil, I take the opportunity to tell you that there are loyal fans, passionate for your work (and Christopher Sheldrake) in my country. Being here in this interview with you is a way to represent them as well as celebrate the moment with other Serge Lutens perfumery lovers from all over the world. Welcome, Monsieur Lutens.

Cris: You always have a strong relationship with the concept of "beauty," with what is esthetically graceful. Your professional path shows clearly the beauty of the Photograph, the Make-up and Hairstyle, the Fashion, the Perfumery and diverse dialogues with Art. Why have you decided to dedicate yourself to the search for beauty?

Serge Lutens: Beauty for me may or may not be beauty for you. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We can recognize ourselves through it as well as through all those who share with us these affinities. The notion of choice does not exist. In this case, it is born from one undeterminable obligation. We can also be ourselves: what would be strong and remarkable without being beautiful? But can beauty determine itself? It is the light that gives us the answer.

Cris: What is the beauty for Serge Lutens and what is the point of intersection between this concept and your perfumery?

Serge Lutens: One more time, beauty can’t be determined as simply one thing and, nevertheless, it is linear. It must stimulate and give me an answer which will generate a question. I would say that beauty – if I can define it – would be the instant when we raise our heads. It can destroy and re-build. It is neither stable nor motionless. Perfumery is one of the ways of expression which would be visual, literary or olfactory. In this case, beauty takes part in the same principle, but I would be unable to determine it in an absolute manner. Beauty is vivacious, it escapes from us the exact instant we think we can define it.

Cris: In your fragrances, there are moments of the olfactory development that such characters as the disturbed, the burlesque, the tragic, the ugly reign in place of the graceful and other characteristics perceived as positive. Because of it there are people that have some difficulties to evaluate your fragrances as they demand some maturity and olfactory and aesthetical sensibility over conventionality. In my critical sense, I think that to reach the gracefulness, mainly in the niche perfumery genre, ugly moments may be necessary and/or many times the gracefulness can be disguised. Mass-market fragrances may be called "mild-mannered". So which of your perfumes, best and purposely, hide the gracefulness behind apparently olfactory notes hard to deal with?

Serge Lutens: There are not good texts or poetries of Charles Baudelaire or of Jean Genet without cruelty. It is one of the absolute elements of a text impulse. It is the harmony between two right words that can result in a phrase. We cannot confound what is graceful and what is beautiful. The most savory recipes are not the most sugary, but are the most surprising in complexity. I don’t like to refer to the past but I think "Musc Koublaï Khan” is one illustration of this case. This perfume is skin, animalistic with a top note that is very strong and lies down on skin with an absolute tenderness, comfortably as a base note.

Cris: From the 80's on, the world of perfumery came alive with your collaboration a la Shiseido. Perfumes such as Nombre Noir (1981) and Feminité du Bois (1992) were avant-garde to a market that has never seen creations that opened ways to the perfume concept as art piece. When they were created, what did you think reactions would be?Feminite du Bois by Shiseido and Serge Lutens.

Serge Lutens: I never think of the audience: I am my own audience! Some people will love my creations, others not… My work is an amorous work, not an opportunistic work. In "Féminité du Bois", what was more significant than the actual use of cedar was the fact of including it in the centre of the perfume (more than 60%). A true unbalance! After all, the aberration is the only thing that makes me feel well. “Feminité du Bois" should have had a course as important as Chanel N.5. It is a myth, especially for the field professionals and perfume amateurs.

Cris: Do you have the intention of releasing again the legendary Nombre Noir? That may be the dream of any Lutensian...

Serge Lutens: Personally, I don’t wish it because out of its "packaging", the perfume loses its sense. It was a speech. Against “Feminité du Bois", this white perfume only was valuable in the dark. It was its trademark! Out of this original context, this perfume is not more anything and what “Feminité du Bois" represents until now is a revolution in the perfumery.

Cris: We can say that Feminité du Bois is a refined androgynous perfume. When we smell it, there is an impression of rupture in the perfume division per genre (even the fragrance is more female). This rupture is very appraised by the niche perfumery. The perfume seems not to be a sex. Is the androgynous concept limited to the end of the division between female and male perfumes with different aromas in comparison to the unisex market versions or can we say that the perfume had a social engagement for the sexual freedom in the 90’s, a major decade for perfume releases?

Serge Lutens: I think that the products (make-up, perfumes…), the fashion, track a society that thinks in developing or retrograding. I deal with the perfume as everything that I thought of as important, as one of the occasional elements of my disagreements, in order to harmonize it. The perfume, as well as the make-up must be felt deeper, as one element that can sustain our options and, therefore, transport us. Personally, I never could leave to a perfume the possibility to determine my sex.

Cris: Since the beginning of your perfumery, practically, 20 years went on, what represents a reasonable time of evolution is also rather important. Considering where we were in terms of perfumery and where we are now, which was the greatest contribution of Serge Lutens to the consumers of perfumes, mainly considering that your perfumes are luxurious goods and, therefore, inaccessible for the majority of the market?

Serge Lutens' latest, Serge Noir.

Serge Lutens: The luxury kills everything: the project, the heart and the pulse. I went to the venture, I harmonize myself with my disaccords and for that very reason I deal well with those who are identified with this.

Cris: It is natural to analyze in your work the dialogue with various fields of knowledge: visual arts, literature, mythology and others, moreover it is evident the fact you are an art learner, a poet of the perfumes. One example of this is the recently released Serge Noire, the fragrance that takes the Greek myth of the Phoenix and which took 10 years to be created. Being an autodidact, do you have some method of study to create perfumes? How do you organize yourself to have a work so creative and, beautifully, a man of the arts so versatile in various areas?

Serge Lutens: Art is a consequence. It is not a goal. I don’t want to make Art. If it is Art, better! In all the fields, I wanted to find the best answer to me.

Cris: The majority of your perfume creations are a result of the beautiful and loyal work with a chemist. How does it work in practical ways, where there is an artist who creates the concept and another artist who translates it technically?

Serge Lutens: Christopher and I work, respecting the roles of each one, session by session. It is handicraft. The words, the environments are very important. There are many “wrongs”, many trials, and many experiences with essences that I suggest to him and which, sometimes, are astonishing. It is necessary to experiment. The perfume is organic and we are walking over an unstable ground, dealing with the impalpable one. All is alive and may work well or, in the opposite, very wrong. Nevertheless, I don’t lower my head: creation is obsessive. “I know what I like and dislike”.

Cris: Tell us a little about your creative process.

Serge Lutens: For that, I am obliged to give you an example: a seamster creates a sketch. This sketch will become a model which will be re-worked by the seamster, who will apply his pins to it, his scissors, will modify the length, the neckline, the choice of the fabric. Little by little, it will come the first presentation of the model and, in fact, it is about a presentation to my cruel nostril!s Beyond that, all have the same value, my team and I, since it would be unimaginable to be in service of something that would not be the perfume or the spirit of this perfume, that is what I do.

Cris: Although Paris is the cradle of the perfumery as well as the location of Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido, there is much more of Morocco in Serge Lutens. Morocco is your history, your choice, your inspiration, your emotion and the influences of the East are in most of your perfumes. What is the essence of Morocco which we can consider as the metaphor to define Serge Lutens and Serge Lutens' perfumes?

Serge Lutens: Morocco is the origin of my taste for perfumes. Indeed, before that I did not appreciate them so much as now. After that, my taste became visible and tactile as the wood, the amber and I needed these signs. There I found them and, if I had to choose only one essence, I should choose Morocco!

Cris: In your interview for Lumiere.com you commented your vision about the women in the photograph as "muses of a painter" and said “Once the image is finished, this woman no longer exists for me". About this theme, there are perfumes which are extremely feminine in your range of fragrances such as "Un Lys" and "Sa Majesté la Rosè". The first has the delicacy and the sensuality of the Lily and can be interpreted as half-human, half-divine as it was an ironic fragrance created for eternal goddesses. The second exalts the beauty and the delicacy of the rose and personifies in one fragrance the Greek Myth of Chloris Nymph. Considering this femininity in the fragrances, can we say that in your perfumery "Once a perfume is finished, this woman exists for you forever", I mean, in the Lutens’ perfumery the feminine images become eternal such as myths and goddesses?

Serge Lutens: The question of the feminineness in a perfume is not, to me, a problem that comes from outside. I would say and, expect that you guess that the feminine had been absorbed. It is in me, what is supposed that I had captured the feminineness and that it be a mirror. It gives an answer; it must come from inside of me. It does not inspire me, I inspire it. Otherwise it would kill me!

Cris: Taking into consideration the entire perfumery (be niche or be mass-market) what is the perfume that is closer to the concept of masterpiece (other brands aside from Shiseido or Serge Lutens perfumes) under your point of view? Why?

Serge Lutens: “Serge Noire" for which I feel a very special affection and was extremely "peaufiné" (refined). I make question of the verb "peaufiner" because it contains the word skin ("peau") and the word end (“fin"). It is absolute ether. On the other hand, I could not ever use the term masterpiece.

Cris: I am also a lover of make-up and some years ago I read a phrase of Shu Uemura, in my opinion one of the best global make-up artists, whose brand I like very much. He said: “Makeup is one of the best ways to reveal a person's essence. An artistic color palette enhances one's individual beauty and allows for unique makeup expressions' (Shu Uemura)". For most of people, the perfume is also a way of revealing the essence of each one, such as the make-up. The perfume can reveal various expressions of the “fragrant self”, as the romantic one, the sensual one and many states of spirits. This is one point of view. On the other hand, it seems to me a paradox to think that both can reveal the essence of a person, considering that they are also elements of dissimulation, of superficial adornment and, in an amplified way, used as superfluous objects of desire, consumer objects to meet an esthetic and/or glamorous demand. The essence loses itself, in most of the cases. This is another point of view. The love for make-up and perfumes are very close to those who admire the beauty of both. And you are the master of the make-up and of the perfumery. Taking into consideration all that was said and your genial quote: “Nous sommes tous fragiles. Le parfum est une arme contre notre fragilité, notre timidité” (source: Plurielles.fr), do you think that perfume is used as social masks? Or will a person’s essence be revealed with a perfume?

Serge Lutens: Make-up and perfume can hide as much as reveal. A perfume can also give a meaning to a choice or the opposite. It is the personal expression of what we are or what we imagine to be in the instant.

Cris: To finalize, Monsieur Lutens, what is the art piece that defines Serge Lutens and his perfumery and why it translates your art in perfumes. It may be in the field of the painting, the literature, the photograph… Tell us a little about Serge Lutens and his synonym in the Art.

Serge Lutens: I don’t owe synonyms, I owe impulses that guide me and which I identify with. It may be a text of Charles Baudelaire, Jean Genet, one sculpture of Michelangelo, but the best representation of what I aspire for now and then, or the rupture that it imposes, is the painting "« Les demoiselles d’Avignon » of Pablo Picasso.

Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon

Cris: Monsieur Lutens, It was a pleasure to interview you. Today I feel myself in the earth and the sky. A flower in paradise, human, and goddess. Interviewing you lifts my feet from the floor and makes a dream come true. I selected Un Lys for this interview, delicate and spontaneous flower which blooms closer to the gods of the perfumery such as you. Merci.

I would like to thank my friend Alix Cooper who helped me with the French. Alix Cooper, Brazilian from Rio de Janeiro, lives in Genebra. When she can, she takes the TGV to Les Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido where she surrenders herself to Ambre Sultan, Tubéreuse Criminelle, Encens et Lavande. This Autumn, she is wearing Serge Noire, night and day, after a Summer of Fleurs de Citronnier. Alix loves oriental essences, however when she wants to, she is chypré and jasminé avec délice.
